The ‘Third Front’: China resurrects Mao’s military capabilities

As ties with Washington sour, China is reviving a cold war strategy to defend against a US attack Dotted across the mountainous roads of Sichuan and just a few hours’ drive from some of China’s most bustling cities, the crumbling ruins of an abandoned military experiment are eerily quiet. Top secret factories that once housed thousands of workers are now overgrown with vegetation; nearby villages, empty of young people who were once shipped in from across the country to build China’s future, are plastered with advertisements for hearing aids and, in once case, a bundle deal on coffins. Millions of workers were deployed to these remote mountain locations as part of a huge defence program that stayed secret for over a decade. Sinner sees off Lehecka to complete Sunshine Double without dropping a set

World No 2 seals Miami Open final 6-4, 6-4 Sinner won in Indian Wells earlier in March Jiri Lehecka entered his first Masters 1000 final at the Miami Open in the best serving form of his life. He had won every service game in the tournament, a feat achieved by just eight men at this level before him. The ease with which he brushed aside all nine break points against him reflected his confidence. It took two return games for Jannik Sinner to viciously drag the Czech back down to earth. Ten minutes in, Sinner had already broken Lehecka’s unbreakable serve. As has usually been the case over the past few years, Sinner burst into the lead and refused to let it go. The club considered a move for De Zerbi, the former Brighton manager, after they sacked Thomas Frank on 11 February and before they appointed Tudor. De Zerbi had just left Marseille but he decided he needed a break from the game and would most likely look to resume work in the summer. Esther Perel provided couples therapy for a man and his AI ‘girlfriend’ and now I fear for the human race | Emily Mulligan

I heard celebrity therapist Esther Perel provide a couples counselling session for a man and his AI “girlfriend ”. As a result, my soul will never know peace. Something very, very drastic needs to occur to fix society before more precious, real people spend their allotted hours on Earth being kept company by a machine that does a good job of approximating a human interaction. Hollywood in the gantry: Welsh derby gets Wrexham-heavy makeover

Clearly the suits at Sky Sports thought Wrexham v Swansea City on a Friday night needed its own sideshow. Mary Said What She Said review – Isabelle Huppert shimmers as Mary, Queen of Scots

Adelaide festival This won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but Huppert delivers an exacting performance in Robert Wilson’s hypnotic, incantatory play Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email Mary, Queen of Scots is one of those perennial figures trotted out as a universal signifier, often for femininity itself, an image of rectitude and self-sacrifice in the face of unimaginable deprivation. The problem is that the historical record doesn’t quite support this narrative: Mary possibly conspired to murder her second husband in order to marry her third, and despite protestations to the contrary, remained a serious threat to the reign of Elizabeth I until the moment she was executed. She was a political player who lost, not an ingenue caught in the crossfire of history. Famed French stage and screen actor Isabelle Huppert has worked with equally famed (and now sadly late) American theatre maker Robert Wilson twice before this collaboration, and it’s easy to see why she would come bac...
