He had won every service game in the tournament, a feat achieved by just eight men at this level before him. The ease with which he brushed aside all nine break points against him reflected his confidence. It took two return games for Jannik Sinner to viciously drag the Czech back down to earth. Arsenal are closing in on a deal to sign Raheem Sterling on loan from Chelsea, who are poised to add to their ranks of wingers by landing Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho on loan with an obligation to buy. But Enzo Maresca’s hopes of bringing in a striker were thwarted by the club failing to prise Victor Osimhen away from Napoli.
After another frantic transfer window at Chelesea, the club were finally able to find a new home for Sterling. Arsenal emerged as the main contenders for the 29-year-old winger, whose hopes of a move had been complicated by his £325,000-a-week contract, and they were working to finalise a season’s loan as the deadline edged closer.
