Désiré Doué joins the global A-list to lead PSG’s coronation as kings of Europe | Barney Ronay

Attacking tyro with a martial artist’s precision is Neymar without the madness and the further maths version of Lamine Yamal’s fine art The third great Moment of Doué was beautiful for its simplicity, 63 minutes into this game and with Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 up. As Désiré Doué glided in on goal, all alone suddenly in a wide open patch of green, he was found by a deliciously weighted through pass from Vitinha. From there Doué allowed the ball to run across him as the retreating Inter defenders closed at his back, a perfect little screenshot of time, space, angles, ground speed allowing him to open his right instep and shoot with the path of the pass, wrong-footing Yann Sommer and easing the ball into the far corner. ‘We were almost doing Mario Kart’: Verstappen and Russell slate Monaco F1 GP pit stops

Mandatory pit stops imposed in bid to liven up race Russell said crowd were ‘sipping champagne on a yacht’ Max Verstappen and George Russell both issued a blunt disapproval of Formula One’s attempts to enliven the Monaco Grand Prix by imposing mandatory pit stops. Verstappen compared it unfavourably to Mario Kart, and Russell dismissed the policy as having failed and the race an irrelevance to an audience that were “sipping champagne on a yacht”. F1 had hoped that enforcing two pit stops would make for some jeopardy and create at least strategic interest in the 78-lap race through the narrow streets of Monte Carlo but it failed to do so. Nor did it address the fundamental problem which was once more painfully clear in the race on Sunday: that modern F1 cars are too big and too heavy to pass one another in Monaco. No overtakes on track were achieved in the entire race. Continue reading... from The Guardian https://ift.tt/jf8A1XH via IFTTT

Sentimental Value review – Stellan Skarsgård is an egomaniac director in act of ancestor worship

Cannes film festival Joachim Trier’s entertaining drama sees Norwegian auteur-on-the-slide Skarsgård putting his showbiz family through the wringer in the service of his fading career Here is an exuberant, garrulous, self-aware picture about an ageing and egomaniac film director and his two grownup daughters; it comes from Norwegian film-maker Joachim Trier, who gave Cannes the marvellous romantic drama The Worst Person in the World in 2021 , starring the award-winning Renate Reinsve, who stars in this one as well. The film cycles through a range of moods and ideas, and finally delivers a fair bit of that sentimentality from the title; it’s a movie of daddy issues and cinematic adventures in the manner of Fellini and Bergman, with a gag about overhearing a therapist’s session through the heating pipes, pinched from Woody Allen’s Another Woman. Stellan Skarsgård plays preening auteur Gustav Borg, whose career is on the slide; many years ago he left his wife, Sissel, a psychotherapist...

Watchdog urges Scotland to take action after repeatedly missing climate targets

Climate Change Committee says original goal of a 75% emissions cut by 2030 will now be delayed by up to six years The UK’s climate watchdog has warned that Scotland needs to take “immediate action at pace and scale” to cut its emissions after ministers axed a series of policy pledges. The Climate Change Committee (CCC), an official advisory body, said ministers in Edinburgh needed to take urgent action to curb emissions from buildings and transport to cut Scotland’s overall emissions to nearly zero by 2045. Abandoned a target to cut car miles by 20% by 2030. Dropped a pledge to rapidly decarbonise homes by mandating low-carbon heating systems. Cut funding for tree planting. Missed targets to restore degraded peatland. Ignored calls for a plan to cut meat and dairy consumption, and failed to use their powers to tax air travel more heavily. The Comedy About Spies review – rapid fire gags in a delightfully silly show

Noël Coward theatre, London The sheer rate of jokes, from groanworthy to dynamite, may leave you crying helpless tears of laughter in this farce from the Mischief company ‘Vodka martini.” “Shaken?” “Yes, but I’ll be fine.” If groanworthy jokes of that calibre float your boat, The Comedy About Spies, set in early 1960s London, will be plain sailing. Even if they don’t, that needn’t put you off: the new show from Mischief, the company behind the smash-hit … Goes Wrong series, also offers farce, slapstick and multiple callbacks. So much of the script relies on linguistic misunderstandings (sweet/suite, need/knead, etc) that even the most tolerant viewer may become homophone-phobic. The nonsense, orchestrated by director Matt DiCarlo, kicks off immediately with secret agents confusingly named after letters of the alphabet (“Not U – you !”). We then jump to the art deco lobby of the Piccadilly Hotel where MI6, the CIA and the KGB are trying to get their hands on the mysterious Project Mid...

Reeves’s Mansion House accord on pension funds is long on virtue-signalling | Nils Pratley

There are so many conditions attached to the ‘pledge’ to invest in the UK that its claims should be taken with a large helping of salt UK pension funds to unlock up to £50bn of investment Terrific news, eh? UK pension funds have agreed to invest more of their assets in the UK, specifically in private markets, and specifically from their defined contribution (DC) schemes. Most of the big names are on the list of signatories to the expanded Mansion House accord: Aviva, Legal & General, Phoenix and more. And they’ve agreed to do their patriotic duty on a voluntary basis. “I welcome this bold step by some of our biggest pension funds,” said the chancellor, Rachel Reeves. There is another way to view the fanfare. There are so many conditions attached to the “pledge” to invest in the UK that this looks more like an exercise in virtue-signalling. It is not helped by the adventurous arithmetic behind the government’s claim that the accord will “unlock up to £50bn” for the economy by 2...
